Number
system defines a set of value that is used to represent quantity.
There are
two types of number system –
(1) Non-positional Number System
(2)Positional Number System
(1)Non-positional Number System: In ancient time, people used to count on their fingers .When their fingers are became insufficient for counting ,stones ,sticks or pebbles were used to indicate the values .This method of counting is called Non-positional Number system.

(2) Positional Number System : In positional number system , the value of each digit in number is defined not only by a symbol, but also by the symbol position
E.g.
Decimal number system, Binary number system, Octal number system, Hexadecimal
number system.
Base
or Radix
Base or Radix : Base or Radix tells the number of symbol used in the number system.
Decimal
Number System = {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}-ten element [Hence base 10]
Binary
Number System ={0,1}-two elements [Hence base = 2]
Octal Number
System = {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7}-eight elements [Hence base=8]
Hexadecimal
number System = {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F}-sixteen elements [Hence base
= 16]
